08 Nov It Takes a Village to Raise a Child
Hello and welcome to Playfair Village. A space where I hope we can create our own tribe of like-minded mummas. I look forward to sharing the journey of being a mum with you all, the highs, the lows and everything in between. As always I am getting way ahead of myself. So firstly, Hi, I am Jessie. I am the proud founder of Playfair Kids, a new website selling fair trade and eco-friendly products for kids and mums. This business venture has been motivated by a lifelong love of our environment and it’s people. My passion in these two areas has driven me to be an environmental and marine scientist, a coordinator of volunteer programs abroad, an African safari guide and a high school biology teacher. More recently I have settled down. Well sort of, I am now a mum to two gorgeous, very busy little boys. I have taken all the things I am passionate about and put it together creating Playfair Kids. I hope you can join me on this next adventure.
Why Playfair Village?
The fair trade products we stock at Playfair Kids come from communities where village culture still exists, where mums are in constant contact with other mums to share, laugh, help and sometimes cry together. I don’t want to glorify their lives. On my travels I have seen that life can be so harsh and tough, but these women get through what life throws at them together. I believe the saying “it takes a village to raise a child”. Unfortunately in our culture we often parent behind closed doors with a much smaller support network. I want this blog site to be a place where us mums can experience tips and tricks from others, our own little village of sorts.
At Playfair Kids our motto is “Be Kind to the Earth and Fair to its People”. If we could all teach our children these two things, I think we would be leaving the world in safe hands. I aim to provide lots of useful advice, and tips and tricks for you all, including ideas to teach our children how to be compassionate little eco- warriors, and useful tips to support you through your own journey as a mum. As the wise Mother Theresa said “If you want to change the world go home and love your family”. Don’t underestimate yourself and the importance of your role as a mum. I also look forward to introducing you to some of the inspiring, talented companies I am fortunate to work alongside, part of Playfair Kids’ global village. By supporting us you are supporting them and the amazing work they do, and for this we are so thankful.
I hope you find this a positive, useful space to take 5 minutes time out. Like all well-meaning advice, if it resonates or works for you, run with it. If not just ignore it. I would love you all to add to the discussion and to share the tips and tricks you have learnt along the way. Please help me keep this a positive space and as my mum taught me, if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all.
